The house where BFK has its offices was built before George Washington was born. So, it's not unusual for odd things to happen. Doors have opened and closed themselves and electronics have turned themselves off and on. Sometimes at night, it sounds as if there is a social event downstairs in what originally was the house's parlor. The odd photograph has some unexplainable element to it.
Regularly, one could swear another person has walked in the house, shut the door, and is walking around the keeping room but, upon investigation, one realizes s/he is alone in the house. The opposite, sounds on the third floor, is also true.
All these things have been experienced by both BFK staff as well as guests.
All that being said, no one has ever felt uncomfortable or unsettled in the house -- not even alone, late at night during renovation. Thus, we are not complaining about our co-inhabitants.
Last night had a different kind of flavor, though. Not bad but, perhaps, intelligent?
Ma Bunny (MB) put Baby Bunny (BB) to bed and then went to bed herself and fell asleep. I was downstairs. I felt compelled to look up room from my book into the keeping room, which was dark except for a stairway lamp. I saw, where there was no shadow, a shadow appear as if someone had walked down the stairs, and paused in front of the lamp -- standing at the base of the stairs.
I closed my eyes and opened them again. The shadow remained.
Then it disappeared as if someone had turned it off like a light.
I got up and looked at the stairs and no one was there. As a parent might do when experiencing weirdness in the house, I went upstairs to check on BB, who I found flat on her face, asleep -- not a safe position for a baby at all, as the mattress hugged her face preventing fresh air from getting to her. I put her on her back and, satisfied she was OK, went to check on MB in the other room. She was sound asleep.
Was the shadow trying to get my attention so that I would go check on BB, who needed to be rolled over? I like to think so, and hope that it's true.
